Here are some of the most common questions asked regarding our personal training services and training center. If you don’t find the answer you’re looking for, please give us a call or send us a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible!

HOW ARE YOU DIFFERENT FROM PERSONAL TRAINING AT A REGULAR GYM?

Regular big-box gyms have a lot going on that takes the personal focus away from training. They have large non-training member bases to support, extra services to manage (child care, tanning, etc.) and are often crowded, which can make it hard to carve out space to train in, or makes you compete with other people for access to equipment. It can also be a highly intimidating environment for someone new to exercise.

Personal training offerings in large gyms also typically involve a new client being passed from person to person during the sign-up process. They work with one person for an assessment (if they offer one), then have to talk to someone else about pricing plans, and yet another person to set up the schedule.

At ActiveBody Fitness, all we do is training, and we work hard to do it well. Our facility is dedicated to providing a more personal, less intimidating training experience, which is especially helpful if you’re new to exercise. Our trainers are certified through nationally-accredited institutions, and most have degrees in Exercise Science or related fields.

You’ll work with the same trainer throughout the new client experience, from your initial GetActive Fitness Assessment; to training and pricing options; to scheduling your sessions. Our trainers strive to build solid client-trainer relationships, and won’t hand you off to someone else. They’re your partner in fitness!

WHY DO I NEED A GETACTIVE FITNESS ASSESSMENT FIRST?  CAN’T I JUST START TRAINING THE FIRST SESSION?

Our GetActive Fitness Assessments are a crucial first step for an individual desiring to become more active.

It is our responsibility as certified fitness professionals to take our clients through a thorough evaluation to make sure there are no contraindications to exercise or muscular imbalances that could put them at risk for an injury.

Doing this helps us learn about our client’s abilities and program their workouts so they can be pushed outside their comfort zones safely and effectively to achieve their goals in a timely manner!

A doctor or other health professional wouldn’t just start treating you without getting to know you and doing an initial examination – fitness is no different!

WHAT TYPES OF HOME FITNESS EQUIPMENT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

You don’t need much for effective, general workouts at home. There are many bodyweight exercises you can do that don’t require any equipment at all!  Don’t discount bodyweight exercises, they can be challenging!

If you’d like something to work with at home, investing in a set of resistance tubes or bands is a good start. They can be used for strength exercises as well as stretching and recovery.  A small set of dumbbells or a couple kettlebells are also a great way to start, and they don’t take up much space.  An aerobic-style step is also great.

When it comes to large exercise machines like treadmills, exercise bikes, ellipticals, or all-in-one “home gyms”, our advice is simply… don’t. Just don’t do it. Many people buy these machines because they think, “Hey, if I have this at home I’ll workout more!”  But in reality, they get used maybe a dozen times and then turn into really expensive clothes racks.  Don’t believe it? Just go look on Facebook and see how many people are trying to sell these machines!  If you have that kind of money to spend, put it to better use by signing up for personal training!

CAN YOU WRITE ME A DIET PLAN WHEN I TRAIN WITH YOU?

We can help you learn to make better food choices and discuss topics such as the impact of different macronutrients and meal planning/prep ideas; but, if you’re looking for a prescribed diet plan to follow, you should consult with a registered dietician or your physician to develop one that fits your needs. A diet plan that works for one person may not work for you or may actually be dangerous.

As a rule, personal trainers who have your best interests in mind won’t prescribe a diet plan unless they actually have the dietary education, degree, and certification to back it up. If a trainer offers to write you one, or a random person on the Internet has an “awesome diet plan” you can follow, be wary and check their backgrounds.

I’M NOT INTERESTED IN TRAINING BUT WOULD LIKE TO WORKOUT THERE. DO YOU OFFER MEMBERSHIPS?

Our main focus is personal training, and our facility is equipped for that purpose. We’re not a general gym and don’t have all of the same equipment you’d find in those. However, we do offer a monthly training center membership option if you’re looking to get a workout in during your lunch breaks or after work, etc.

The training center membership does have a few general restrictions:

  • Our training center can only be used during our business hours. There is no off-hours access.

  • When our clients are being trained, they have priority access to equipment needed for their session.

  • From time to time, we may restrict members from using the training center in order to accommodate seminars or other events.

If you’re interested in a training center membership, contact us for more details!

I’M A TRAINING CLIENT. CAN MY SPOUSE / SIGNIFICANT OTHER / RELATIVE / FRIEND COME WORKOUT ON THEIR OWN WHILE I’M THERE FOR MY SESSION?

If space permits, sure! We offer a $10 day pass option to allow someone to work out in the training center.  They’ll need to sign our standard waiver form, so if they’re under 18 years old (minimum 12 years), a parent or guardian will need to sign as well. The same restrictions for memberships also apply to day passes.

DO YOU TRAIN CHILDREN? I WANT MY SON/DAUGHTER TO START EXERCISING AND GET INTO FITNESS!

Absolutely, but we have some special rules for training minors (under 18):

  • Our minimum age for training is 12 years old.

  • A parent or legal guardian typically must be present during the training session.  However, a permission waiver can be signed if a parent approves of their child participating in training without their supervision.

  • Children must be dropped off and picked up on time if the parent isn’t staying during the training session.

MY SON/DAUGHTER IS IN SPORTS IN SCHOOL. CAN YOU HELP THEM IMPROVE IN THEIR SPECIFIC SPORT?

We can definitely help with general strength and conditioning with focus on certain areas that may benefit a specific sport.  However, we are not athletic trainers, which is a specialized form of performance training.

This doesn’t mean your child wouldn’t benefit from training with us!  We simply want to set the proper expectations if you’re thinking of having them work with us.
